MEDIA REVIEW SPRING 23
Looking for something to watch or read? Here’s some pieces I enjoyed over these last 3 months that I think you’ll like too!
SKIING – IN YOUR DREAMS
Aptly named, In Your Dreams, the latest film from Laura Obermeyer, beautifully captures the ephemeral moments found in skiing. With her impeccable eye, Obermeyer takes the viewer on a journey that celebrates skiing on and off the mountain. Both silly and stunning, In Your Dreams in the simplest of terms, makes me happy when I watch it. It reminds me of the sense of peace and gratitude found while having fun with friends in the snow. Set to a killer soundtrack, In Your Dreams is a definite addition to my yearly snow stoke movie session.
SURFING – TOASTED
Released in early February, Toasted is a surf film starring, directed by, and edited by 17 year old Caity Simmers. An ode to classic surf films, Simmer’s whimsical style drives this film and makes it fun. Watching Toasted as an adult invokes a sense of summertime nostalgia. A reminder of the joys found on the beach with friends. As Simmer’s first full length project, it is an impressive entry into the world of surf media and I can’t wait to see how Simmer’s style on her board and in her editing will continue to grow.
Written by featured athlete Zofia Reych, Born to Climb: From rock climbing pioneers to Olympic athletes is an exploration of climbing history from its origins in mountaineering to its recent debut at the 2022 Summer Olympics. A combination of the iconic and the underrepresented, Reych transports the reader across several generations of climbing. Reading this book exponentially expanded my knowledge of climbing history. With an emphasis on women and queer folks in climbing, Born to Climb is a fantastic read for those who want to learn climbing’s story beyond Yosemite Valley.
ROLLERSKATING – FURORE
This edit has me dangerously close to buying a pair of rollerskates. Presented by DogDays Magazine, Furore is the first full edit from the Italian quad collective Coven. High energy from start to finish, the edit features a number of talented skaters including Coven’s founder Irene Dose. Colorful and filled to the brim with stoke, Furore will have you halfway out the door to your local skatepark by the time you’re done.
